The history of Hotel Paradies
The Paradies has a very long tradition; the origins of the Paradies are traceable back to 1654 as a placed of refuge for travellers arriving at Freiburg’s city gates, at the junction from either Breisach or Basel.
Our family has owned and
managed the hotel since 1938.
The father of the present owner,
Karl Friedrich Schüler bought
the Hotel together with his
wife Anna Schüler.
After the death of his mother
Hermann Schüler, with his wife
Ehrentrud Schüler (nee Schmidle)
took over the ownership and
management of the hotel. Between the years 1976 and 1978 the old hotel was totally re-built. The current hotel and restaurant with the vineyards were opened in 1978.

In 1991 Lothar Schuler joined his parents in the family business. Following his apprenticeship as chef he gained much experience in various fields of catering and gastronomy.

Lothar also manages the vineyards and wine cellar for the Paradies, continuing in the long family tradition.



In 2000 Ruth Herre (nee Schüler) also became part of the family team. Ruth originally trained as a hotelier after which she worked in England and France, gathering international experience in Hotel management techniques. She continued her education and gained a degree in Hotel Business Management, following which she strengthened her knowledge and experience in various hotels in Germany.


From the oldest to the youngest family members we are all very open and cosmopolitan.

We enjoy the contact to our guests and look forward to being able give our guests a welcome to a home away from home;
